Chapter 8
By the following day, Avery had interviewed Catfish, who claimed not to know anything more than Jackson had already shared with us. Then, she shared everything she had been able to dig up with the team at the FBI, who assured her that they were all over the case now that they had names of individuals to track down. Parker wasnât happy about being sidelined, but I could see that my friend was physically and emotionally exhausted. When I suggested that she give the FBI a few days to see what they could come up with before she involved herself any further, she actually agreed to take a break to pause and regroup. Parker usually wasnât the sort to stand down. If someone were to ask me, I would be willing to say that I was beginning to suspect that Parker had begun to seriously consider the idea that Sawyer had been involved with the bad guys. And if he was involved, I suspected that she didnât want to be the one to prove it.
Carmen had gone to a lot of trouble to locate condos that fit the criteria provided by Avery, and since the peninsula gang, as a whole, had seemed to have settled on the idea of allowing the FBI to take over at this point, Avery and I decided to head to Whidbey Island. Carmenâs housemates, Rose and Zoe Hubner, would be caring for Kai and Kallie while Carmen, Avery, and I headed to Seattle for a couple days.
I said my goodbyes to Adam and the peninsula gang, and we promised to stay in touch should the situation with either Sawyer or the investigation change. Given everything that had been going on, the thought of being away for too long was somewhat unsettling. After Averyâs unplanned trip to Gooseberry Bay, Carmen didnât utter one complaint when she had to cancel the showings sheâd worked so hard to schedule, and I knew she was anxious to reschedule the showings. I also knew Carmen really wanted to spend time with both her daughters. From the moment I found her, Carmen had never failed to be there for me, so if she wanted a few days of my time, I would happily give them to her.
âWhat do you think about Sawyerâs involvement in the drug ring?â I asked Avery as we drove my SUV toward Whidbey Island. âI wish I could say that despite whatâs been said, thereâs just no way that I believe heâs involved, but I have to admit that it does seem as if the evidence is stacking up against him.â
Avery took a minute to think about things before she responded. It was a gorgeous day on the Sound, and in a way, it felt odd to be having such a serious conversation while we were in the midst of such a gorgeous drive.
âI donât know Sawyer well,â she said. âIâve spoken to him briefly on a couple of occasions when I happened to be visiting you, and he was there with the gang.
